Beware of Phishing Scams

Body

Middlesex County College’s Information Technologies Department (MCC IT) would like to remind all students of the possibility of receiving phishing emails offering fake job and internship opportunities. MCC ITD encourage students to be mindful of scams that pose as job offers. NEVER send money to someone asking for an upfront ‘prepayment’ for the promise of a job if you first pay them.

MCC IT urges students to understand and recognize the warning signs of a phishing email, so that students are able to decipher a real job offer from a phishing job offer.

Review the below red flags of phishing below to recognize any malicious emails in your MCC email.

  • Look at the “From” email address. Confirm that the @ address is the company that the sender says it is.
  • Hover over links to see the URL before you click.
  • Look for an official email signature.
  • If you don’t recognize the sender, don’t respond to the email
  • Do not send sensitive data, like a social security number, over email.
  • Never provide financial information, like credit card numbers or bank account numbers, over email.
